HVAC Systems are Designed and Installed for Comfort
They are designed to deliver fresh, clean, cool or warm, filtered air to a designated area with an adequate volume, proper velocity and desired temperature in a safe and economical manner to accomplish this comfort.
Over a period of time which varies according to the environment and locality, designed conditions change due to an accumulation of dirt, lint, grease, and other foreign material fallout on all moving parts and along the interior walls of the entire duct work (delivery) system in the air handling unit(s).
This accumulation of foreign material fallout on moving parts of the air handling system creates a greater workload on motors, fans and belts which helps accelerate deterioration, breakdown and excessive energy costs. It reduces the designed comfort and velocity output at the point of utilization. Result = excessive cost and lack of designed comfort.
This accumulation of foreign material fallout along the interior of the entire duct-work system including the plenums, coils, fan blades, turning vanes, etc. reduces the designed volume and velocity output at the point of utilization and this resistance creates a greater workload on the motors, fans and belts which helps accelerate deterioration, breakdown and excessive energy costs. But much worse than all of the above, it creates an environment within the duct-work system that is conducive to fire and smoke hazard of the patient, employees and visitor. Results = reduction of safety and health factors, increased energy and maintenance costs and inability of the systems to produce the comfort that it was designed for.
The above problem may exist in your hospital. If you have not had your air handling systems (supply, return and exhaust) cleaned in the past several years, the problem more than likely does exist.
